M.I.A. at Echostage DC and Concert Etiquette

DSCF4528On April 27, M.I.A. performed to a crowded venue at Echostage. The British rapper performed many songs from her latest album, “Matangi”, but also played hits from past albums. She had high energy, dancers, a bright set, and sang on point.

Unfortunately, the crowd was suffocating, rude, and restless. Being at the front, I was almost crushed to death by the wave of rabid fans vying for the musician’s attention.  People actually got physically and I saw a few audience members with scrapes and black eyes. It was unbelievable. It made me wish that people were screened for level of asshole-ness before being allowed into the venue. So, here are some general rules you should follow when you go to concerts:

  1. Don’t be an asshole.
  2. Please don’t be creepy/invasive with the performer.
  3. It’s definitely not necessary to scream the performer’s name at the top of your lungs 25 times because they will not call your name back so what’s the point? You’re only violating the eardrums of people around you.
  4. Don’t be an asshole.
  5. If you want to be in the front, get there early OR if you are going to attempt to make your way to the front from the back, at least ask and be polite about it, don’t just shove your way there.
  6. Do not hit others to get to the front. Do not get physical. There is never a reason. Stop.
  7. Stay in your lane. Dance in your space. Stop encroaching on other people’s space.
  8. Be a nice person. Be a decent human being. It’s not hard. Imagine if your mother/beloved/whoever you respect was next to you during the concert, would you push them and scream at them? I hope not.
  9. Don’t be an asshole.
  10. Go there for the music! If you’re planning to get wasted and be a drunken mess, at least enjoy yourself in the back of the crowd.

When you’re at a concert, you’re there with tons of other people so just remember: it’s not about you! Have fun, be safe, but also be courteous to other concert goers! Thank you!
